Trevor Paglen in After the Gold Rush:
photographs from the collection

Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY
March 22, 2011 – January 2, 2012

The exhibition’s title, After the Gold Rush, is taken from a classic 1970 song by Neil Young, whose verses contrast a romanticized past with a present of squandered plenty and an uncertain future. Inspired by the recent political and economic upheavals in America and abroad, this selection juxtaposes new photographs that take the long view of the world’s current condition with prescient works from the 1980s and 1990s that remain startlingly relevant today… PRESS RELEASE

Sara VanDerBeek solo show at the Whitney Museum

Curated by Tina Kukielski
September 17, 2010 – December 5, 2010

Sara VanDerBeek’s quiet semi-abstract photographs are based predominantly on sculptural forms created by the artist. In the past, she has collected pictures from various sources, including art history books, archives, magazines, and newspapers, incorporating them into sculptures that are made only to be photographed in the artist’s studio. (After being photographed, the sculptures are immediately dismantled, and VanDerBeek’s pictures provide the only remaining evidence of the temporary structure.) In her work on view in this exhibition, VanDerBeek continues this practice, yet she couples it with ventures outside the studio to explore the subtle perceptual shifts of the sun…

Matt Keegan and Sara VanDerBeek featured in Image Transfer

Curated by Sara Krajewski
Henry Art Gallery, Seattle
October 2, 2010 – January 23, 2011

This exhibition spotlights evolving attitudes toward the appropriation, recuperation, and repurposing of extant photographic imagery. Artists, as both producers and consumers in today’s vast image economy, freely adopt and adapt materials from myriad sources. Images culled from the Internet, magazines, newspapers, advertisements, television, films, personal and public archives, studio walls, and from other works of art are all fair game. Image Transfer brings together artists who divert commonplace, even ubiquitous, visual materials into new territories of formal and idiomatic expression.
Featured artists: Sean Dack, Karl Haendel, Jordan Kantor, Matt Keegan, Carter Mull, Lisa Oppenheim, Marlo Pascual, Amanda Ross-Ho, Sara VanDerBeek, Siebren Versteeg, Erika Vogt, Kelley Walker

Trevor Paglen featured in Free
at The New Museum, New York

Curated by Lauren Cornell
October 20, 2010 – January 23, 2011

Today, culture is more dispersed than ever before. The web has broadened both the quantity and kind of information freely available. It has distributed our collective experience across geographic locations; opened up a new set of creative possibilities; and, coextensively, produced a set of challenges. This fall, the New Museum will present “Free,” an exhibition including twenty-three artists working across mediums-including video, installation, sculpture, photography, the internet, and sound -that reflects artistic strategies that have emerged in a radically democratized landscape redefined by the impact of the web…

Emily Wardill “windows broken, break, broke together”

Solo Exbibition
De Appel Museum, Amsterdam
September 18 – November 28, 2010

Opening Friday September 17, from 6 pm onwards Structured around an ongoing dialogue between British artist Emily Wardill and artist/curator Ian White, the solo exhibition “windows broken, break, broke together” is the most extensive exhibition of Wardill’s films to date. Described as ‘brilliant cinematic labyrinths. Visually striking and playfully rigorous’ the films occupy wildly different stylistic positions as a means of re-animating the ways in which form can become the unquestioned carrier of meaning – by the way in which meaning is implied through metaphor or example, inscribed by case studies, fictionalized in props or interpreted in art criticism, status symbols and as the evidence of crime …

This triptych is the structure on which this book is built…

Garth Weiser at White Flag Projects

Solo Show
White Flag Projects, St. Louis, MO
September 11 – October 23, 2010

Garth Weiser is best known for his highly graphic paintings that compress the vocabulary of abstraction into dense pastiches of history and technique. For his exhibition at White Flag Projects, Weiser presents three paintings of differing form, each emphasizing their discrete intentionalities and temporal relationships to their substrates and mediums. The works include Wall Painting for White Flag Projects, a temporary mural which occupies the gallery’s largest wall; a second painting rendered in water-soluble media on the exterior of the gallery; and an installation of 150 pages torn from I wouldn’t have worn mascara if I knew I was going to be taking a trip down memory lane, an artists book reproducing Weiser’s 2008 painting of the same title…

The Sun as Error by Shannon Ebner

The Los Angeles based artist Shannon Ebner extends her exploration of photography, sculpture and language in this remarkable book, The Sun as Error. In collaboration with Dexter Sinister (design duo David Reinfurt and Stuart Bailey), The Sun as Error re-investigates the meaning and language of photographs, creating both an open-ended reading of her practice and also rethinking the idea of an artist’s monograph. Far from straightforward, the book interweaves her bodies of work, previously unseen one-off pieces, with the language of technical diagrams, optical illusions, and graphic design. One of the persistent motifs through the book’s sequence is an asterisk and, specifically, one imbued with the legacy of the graphic designer Muriel Cooper. As the first design director for MIT Press and the cofounder of the Visible Language Workshop, Cooper’s legacy for reorienting and repositioning the direction of an artist’s monograph is imaginatively explored in the creative partnership of Dexter Sinister and Shannon Ebner. Artist’s book published by The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Department of Photography, and co-ordinated by Dexter Sinister, New York. Distributed by RAM publications.
